On Dec. 16, 2019 Mung Chiang began a one year leave of absence from his role as the Dean of Engineering at Purdue to serve as the director of the Office of the Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State (STAS). Chiang becomes Purdue Dean
On July 1, 2017, Mung Chiang joined Purdue University as the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering. Purdue Engineering is one of the largest in the nation and has always ranked in the top 10. He is also the Roscoe H. George Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue and maintains a visiting appointment at Princeton.
Mittal joins Princeton EDGE Lab

Power of Networks Published
Dr. Chris Brinton and Professor Mung Chiang's book, "Power of Networks: Six Principles that Connect our Lives," was published by Princeton University Press in November 2016. This book provides easily acessible stories on the way that technological, economic and social networks work. Open Fog Consortium, a global nonprofit industry-academia consortium, was launched at the end of 2015 with Princeton EDGE Lab as the only co-founding organization from academia. Princeton University will host its spring members meeting on campus, May 17-18.

Joe-Wong receives Jacobus Fellowship
Carlee Joe-Wong, a Ph.D. student of Applied Mathematics in Princeton EDGE Lab, received the 2015-16 Jacobus Fellowship, the highest honor to graduate students at Princeton University given to one student each from the humanities, social science, science and engineering every year.
Chen and Dutta Joined Faculty
In July 2015, Jiasi Chen, a PhD student at the EDGE Lab, joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside. Aveek Dutta, a postdoc at the EDGE Lab, joined the faculty at the University of Kansas.
PEC Established
Princeton Entrepreneurship Council, the new organization at the university to coordinate entrepreneurship programs, is established in July 2015. PEC is chaired by Mung Chiang and reports to the Provost.
2015 INFOCOM Best Paper Runner-up
The paper “On the efficiency of social recommender networks” by Felix Wong, Zhenming Liu and Mung Chiang received the 2015 IEEE INFOCOM Best Paper Runner-Up. The paper also received the Yelp Data Challenge 2014 Grand Prize.
SDP Industry Forum and Workshop
The Smart Data Pricing 2015 Industry Forum was held at Princeton University on April 9-10, where Paul Jacobs, Dennis Strigl and Henning Schulzrinne gave the Keynote speeches. The 2015 SDP Workshop at IEEE INFOCOM was held in Hong Kong on April 27. Dah-Ming Chiu gave the Keynote and two papers recede the Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs Best Paper in SDP.

SDP wins INFORMS Design Science Award

Princeton Entrepreneurship Initiative
The Princeton Entrepreneurship Advisory Committee (PEAC) was formed in early 2014 to explore the vision, structures, and mechanisms of Entrepreneurship the Princeton Way. Chiang chairs the PEAC, which has launched an input-gathering website for everyone.
SDP Book to be Published
The first book dedicated to Smart Data Pricing (SDP) is being published by Wiley in July 2014. It consists of contributions from dozens of leading researchers across academia and industry to the area of SDP.
Cerf and Kahn Gave Public Lecture
Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn, two of the founders of the Internet, gave a public lecture at Princeton University organized by the EDGE Lab on March 18, in conjunction with a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the TCP/IP protocol. Chiang chairs PEAC
The Princeton Entrepreneurship Advisory Committee (PEAC) was recently formed by Provost Lee to explore the visions, structures, and mechanisms of entrepreneurship at Princeton. Chiang named Keller Center director
Starting March 31, 2014, Mung Chiang will become the Director of the Keller Center, which is center for programs in entrepreneurship and in education innovation on campus. The current Director of the Keller Center, Sanjeev Kulkarni, will become the Dean of Graduate School at Princeton.

Network Optimization at CISS
Every other year in the past 10 years, a track of invited sessions is organized as part of the Conference on Information Science and Systems at Princeton University. This year it will be held March 19-21 with a track of four invited sessions on Communication Network Optimization, Energy Network Optimization, Social Network Optimization, and Network Pricing Optimization.

DataMi Project spun out as startup
DataMi, a Smart Data Pricing (SDP) project originating from the Princeton EDGE Lab, closed the first round of financing from a venture fund, and is spun out as a startup company headquartered in Princeton. In addition, undergraduate projects from the Virtual Elevator event in 2012 have moved on to become startup companies, including SONAR for location tracking and DUMA for job matching in developing countries.
Wireless Lab launched
The Princeton EDGE Lab is expanded to Phase II, with an additional lab space where all wireless equipments are housed, including the recently acquired Azimuth MIMO channel emulator, Faraday chamber, WARP third generation, and white space equipment.
Sen joins Minnesota faculty
Soumya Sen, a postdoc at Princeton EDGE Lab, joined the faculty in the Information Systems Department of the Business School at the University of Minnesota, starting June 2013. Soumya worked on SDP and cloud at EDGE Lab.
New Course and Book
The new textbook: Networks Illustrated: 8 Principles without Calculus, coauthored by Chris Brinton (PhD student in EDGE Lab) and Mung Chiang, is ranking Number 1 among Networking books on Amazon during the first week of July 2013, and reached Top 5 of all Computer and Technology books on Kindle. The new textbook is inspired by MOOC teaching, and reaches out to anyone interested in networking principles without any background in math or in programming.
Chiang Named Doty Professor
Mung Chiang is named the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University starting July 2013. The Doty chair professorship was established in 1938, and the last holder of the Doty Professorship, from 1986 to 2010, was Daniel Tsui, the Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1998.
IEEE SECON Best Paper Award
A paper coauthored by Mung Chiang, his former postdoc Yung Yi (currently an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at KAIST, Korea), and collaborators at Rice University, received 2013 IEEE SECON Best Paper Award. IEEE SECON is a premier conference in the areas of sensor and wireless networking, with an acceptance rate under 20%. The paper is entitled: "Making 802.11 DCF Near-Optimal: Design, Implementation, and Evaluation."
Chiang receives Terman Award
Chiang is selected for the 2013 Frederick Emmons Terman Award, an annual award given by the American Society of Engineering Education for contributions to education innovation including engineering textbooks.

The First Adaptive Book Released
On Valentine's Day 2013, we unveiled the first-ever Integrated and Individualized BookApp (IIB).
Books have forever been following essentially the same format, even with eBooks, bookmarks, animations, and finger gestures. But shouldn't a book, in the form of a tablet app, learn how you learn and adapt accordingly? Shouldn't such a book app integrate a MOOC and remove the boundary between online learning and textbooks?
That's exactly what IIB does. It Integrates video, quiz, feedback, and social learning into the textbook (that's one "I") and adapts both the content and presentation of the chapter based on your Individualized learning need (that's another "I"). In fact, we cannot even call it "a" book anymore, as different people will actually be reading different versions of the book.
We're excited to announce that the first IIB, Chapter 3 of our textbook Network 20Q, is launching on February 14, 2013, as a free app to 100 students around the world.

EDGE Lab receives NSF Grant
EDGE Lab receives NSF grant in the NeTS Program for 2011-2014. The project is on Internet and wireless network access pricing innovation, from new mathematical foundation to prototype implementation, and from empirical data analysis to industry adoption and trials.

A new undergraduate course has started at Princeton in September 2011: ELE381: "Networks: Friends, Money, and Bytes". The course innovates on the material of networking fundamentals, the pedagogical approach of Just In Time, and the course experience through online social networking. TUBE features in NECA EXPO
EDGE Lab's Internet pricing innovation, TUBE project will be featured in both the panel discussion and an exhibition booth at the annual EXPO of the US National Exchange Carrier Association in Chicago from Sept. 12 to 14, 2011.
Chiang receives IEEE Tomiyasu Award
The IEEE has announced the winners of the 2012 IEEE Awards. Mung Chiang is awarded the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, with the citation: "For demonstrating the practicality of a new theoretical foundation for the analysis and design of communication networks". The award's medal will be presented at IEEE INFOCOM in Orlando, Florida in March 2012.
HP Funds Data Center Research
HP awards a two-year funding to Chiang and Rexford's joint work on traffic management in large scale data center that enables scalable cloud services.
Intel Funds Wireless Research
Intel awards a one-year funding to the EDGE Lab to study interference management architectures and optimization algorithms in cellular, WiFi, and femto wireless networks.
Schedule Optimizer v1.0 Released
Suppose you need to decide on a time to host a meeting with 50 persons. Not every person has to attend, but you have to take into account each person's availability at the different meeting time choices, and if he/she is available at a certain time, whether he/she prefers it. The Schedule Optimizer, developed in-house by Princeton EDGE Lab, aims to help you find the best time by balancing various constraints and objectives.

Lan graduates and joins GWU faculty
Tian Lan, a graduate student in the lab, just received his Ph.D. and is joining the faculty of George Washington University this month as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering. Tian worked on network security, simplicity-driven design, and axiomatic theory of fairness during his Ph.D. study.

EDGE Lab Receives 5-Year MURI Grant
A multi-university, inter-disciplinary team including the Princeton EDGE Lab receives the Army Research Office MURI grant for the proposal entitled "Measuring, Understanding, and Responding to Covert Social Networks". This is a 5-year project on analytic methodology and empirical data in the study of tomography of social networks of asymmetric adversaries.

A multi-university team including the Princeton EDGE Lab receives an NSF grant in the Networking Technologies and Systems program for the proposal entitled "Architecting Manageable Interference for Next Generation Wireless Networks". This is a 5-year project on interference mitigation, management, and exploitation in wireless networks.
EDGE Lab Receives Google Grant
An inter-disciplinary team including the Princeton EDGE Lab receives a Google University Research Grant for the proposal entitled "Rethinking Wide Area Traffic Management". This project combines theory and implementation of optimization-based traffic engineering and congestion control in the Internet.
